Locations of study sites |
Three sites in Northern California are being used for this study: Duxbury Reef, just north of San Francisco, the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, approximately 40 miles south of Duxbury Reef, and Davenport Landing, approximately 40 miles south of Fitzgerald Marine Reserve.
At each site, a 30 m2 plot has been selected for study. The plot at Duxbury Reef is located between two transects used by the LiMPETS program. At the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, this study extends towards the ocean an existing 30 m ´ 22 m plot used by the Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans.
The plot chosen for the survey at Davenport Landing overlaps with a smaller plot used by the LiMPETS program to survey sea anemones. An iButton™ Thermochron temperature data logger has been glued to a rock in the approximate center of each survey plot to take temperature measurements. The GPS coordinates (obtained using a Garmin eTrex Legend) of the bolts and the data loggers at the sites are shown below. A detailed topographical profile of the plots has also been created.
