Abundance and size data

The data files are text files organized to allow import into ODV [1] or Microsoft Excel®. Each file is organized as a tab-separated table with a header line describing the variables in the table (and their units of measurement) as well as rows containing data. Comments are present in the data files as rows that start with the characters "//".

Variable Unit Description
Cruise n/a Cruise label. Used within ODV. Calculated using the formula 10000*(year-2000)+100*mon+day for this data
Station n/a Location of survey plot. One of
"DPL": Davenport Landing
"FMR": Fitzgerald Marine Reserve
"DUX": Duxbury Reef
Type n/a Station type. Used within ODV. Marked as type "C" for all data
mon/day/year n/a month/date/year of survey in format mm/dd/yyyy
hh:mm n/a hours:minutes for start of survey in format hh:mm
Longitude degrees_east Longitude of plot (degrees east)
Latitude degrees_north Latitude of plot (degrees north)
Bot. Depth m bottom depth in meters (required by ODV, is set to 0 in data)
Transect Location m transect location (meters) from the NE corner of the plot along the edge joining NE/SE corners of survey plot
Quadrat Location m quadrat location (meters) from the Eastern (shore) side of the plot towards the ocean. Note that Quadrat location = Quadrat number - 0.5, i.e., quadrat 1 spans the distance (0 m,1 m) and is centered at 0.5 m along the transect
Topographical Height m measured topographical height in meters
Reference Height m measured topographical height at center of plot (location of the reservoir). Relative Height = Topographical Height - Reference Height
Density Count/m2 Measured count within a 1mx1m quadrat
Count number Count of A. sola within quadrat whose sizes were measured
Size cm Average size (diameter) of A. sola within the quadrat (computed as sum(s1:s10)/count, rounded to 2 decimal points)
S1 - S10 cm Individual diameter size measurements for sola within a quadrat

Note: In many instances, the sizes were measured in inches. If so, the units are labeled accordingly. Each data file is a tab-separated file containing column labels in the format "Variable_Name [measurement_unit]."

Temperature data

Ocean and Atmospheric temperatures from NOAA buoys [2]. Use text files available at these sites. Columns of interest are date/time, "ATMP" (air temperature) and "WTMP" (water temperature).

Intertidal temperatures measured using iButton® Thermochron data loggers [3]

Temperature data is recorded in text files using the same format as in the NOAA data files. Each file is a tab separated file with year, month, day, hour, minute (UTC), and intertidal temperature (degrees celsius). Note there are gaps in the data.
